Petroglyphs show that the Andean Shamanic Traditions are more than 20,000 years old, making them one of the oldest systems of medicine and healing in the world. For a shaman, health results from physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Far from being separate, these are all important aspects of the self and when in alignment, health, vitality and happiness result. This – to a shaman – is enlightenment.
Rather than being an unrealistic spiritual ideal that requires us to withdraw from life to meditate on a mountain for 20 years, enlightenment is a state of health that comes from being fully immersed in the river of life, with the tools to manage its joys and inevitable challenges.
It is not about transcending this reality but learning to experience and understand it more fully. By boosting these four pillars of health, shamanism enables us to live authentic lives that fully express our potential, and positively impact the people in our networks, and the world around us.

‘I met Anna when she gave a talk at Greenpeace, and I have now done two four-day retreats with her. Each has left me feeling like I have completed seven years of cognitive therapy. The progress I have made still amazes me and I feel light, strong and free’
